Owner Trainer
The owner trainer program is if a client wishes to have a pet canine certified as a service dog.
Criteria:
The pet (between the ages of 6 months to 4 years of age) must be assessed as having the right characteristics, temperment, and ability to carry out the intended tasks. Any documents that deem the cainine medically sound to proceed into training is reviewed. Canines greater than 4 years og age are restricted as it simply is not cost effective.
Program:
The program is 18 months long for the pups and can be adjusted accordingly for more mature dogs that require “fine tuning”. It is a graduated program that takes into account the individual handler’s ability to function in public and to improve on it. The team is prepared for the BCJI test, coached (handler is responsible for the day to day training) on how to carry out the training needed to develop the pet into a task-trained service dog, weekly training sessions for public access, conflict management and respectfully interacting with the public in a wide variety of stimuli. Each team is assessed and critiqued on their weekly progress.
